Welcome to the place where a revolution in
Law Enforcement Leadership is taking place!
Pursuing a career in Policing is a unique experience not found in the everyday world. "To serve and protect" is a noble and honorable form of service to our fellow citizens.
As a new centurion, a lot is expected of every officer, every day, on-duty and off-duty. Beside the inherent danger that we face on the job, an officer's journey all too often takes its toll in emotional costs that will affect one's persona, career and family.
By virtue of the special status in the community, every officer is viewed as a leader who (in the public's mind) must take action against the guilty and protect the innocent from harm.
At the same time, the officer must exercise the best of leadership qualities that reflects the highest standards of one's agency and oneself.
How one understands leadership, exercises leadership and its effect on the officer is the focus of this website and what it represents.
Are any of these questions applicable to you?
- Do you feel a sense of burnout?
- Do you think negatively more often than positively?
- Is policing the center of your world and defines almost every aspect of your life?
- Do you feel alone struggling to solve your career and personal issues?
- Are you looking for a well balanced life and healthy relationships?
- You want to be an inspiring team leader or supervisor, but you aren't developing and motivating yourself and others as well as you could?
- You know what a leader is supposed to do, but do you have a leadership mindset?
- Do you want to move up the career ladder but not sure what it takes?
If you answered, yes to one or more of the questions, you are not alone. An untold number of officers feel the same way. Until now, few if any, agency or department has addressed this side of being a law enforcement officer.
Your Life is Too Valuable to keep Spinning your Wheels
Whatever your aspiration, if you are like most officers, you would work on it by talking to friends (probably other officers you work with), reading books and taking a trial and error approach to finding what works.
Sometimes this approach is successful, but most of the time, it leads to dead-ends and a sense of frustration. Here are some reasons why:
- Because you are a police officer, your friends are also mostly other officers. They very likely have the same issues, but to "open up" may lead to ridicule and humiliation, so everyone tip toes around an issues hoping to get some insight without others really knowing what's wrong.
Besides, who has time to listen to your "personal problems or dreams" in the workplace?
- Family members may show interest in your needs, but don't know what you have been through to identify or help resolve issues or remain neutral with their advice. They may be well meaning, but don't have the skills to draw the best out of you.
- We don't often seek Professional help, even though we should. We don't and you know already why.
You need help and advise based on fact and research and those who have seen and been through what you have, not on hearsay and opinion.
Profit from Research and Experience
There is a lot of evidence to suggest that police officers very often suffer from the effects of a changed worldview and psychological changes. This is due (to a great extent) to the hyper-stress of observing and avoiding the potentially deadly environment of on-duty life.
Someone once described this as, Maintaining alertness for hours in boredom, interrupted by moments of sheer terror.
Hyper-stress and a changed worldview makes it very difficult for officers to live a "normal" life around family, friends and loved ones.
I founded Lawman Coach to provide law enforcement officers with a, no BS, cop to cop, real-world approach that work to address the personal life of being a law enforcement officer.
